What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign, also referred to as clear aligners, can be an alternative to traditional metal braces. These discreet clear aligners work in a series of trays, each tray adding slightly more pressure to your teeth in order to gradually guide them into the desired positions. Invisalign is entirely customized for you, with each tray manufactured to represent each completely customized phase of your treatment plan.
Benefits of Invisalign®
Invisalign has so many benefits that help to make them an alternative. One of the biggest ways Invisalign draws users in is the added benefit of being virtually invisible, and extremely discreet. Clear aligners give you the option to smile confidently and freely, without having to second guess the look of your smile. There’s no need for dietary or lifestyle changes due to the option to remove them as needed, and lastly, you’ll be comfortable the whole way through.
What Does Invisalign® Treat?
Experienced Edmonton Invisalign Orthodontist use the Invisalign system as a treatment tool for several dental medicine issues. Invisalign treatment be a safe, discreet, and effective technique to straighten teeth. Much like traditional metal braces, Invisalign treats a variety of minor to complex orthodontic issues that many people find themselves struggling with. Below we’ll list the most common issues that Invisalign may be a solution for.
A common orthodontic issue is overcrowding in the mouth, with teeth overlapping with one another to create tight spaces and crevices. This creates difficulty when trying to properly clean between the teeth, and can eventually lead to tooth decay and other oral disease. This can also happen if you have small jawbones, and don’t have enough room in your mouth for all of your teeth to grow in properly with adequate space.
A crossbite is the direct result of a crooked or misaligned jaw, which causes the teeth to protrude and align themselves at strange and uneven angles. It’s typical to see upper and lower teeth intersecting with a crossbite, which can happen essentially anywhere in the mouth.
Teeth can easily become worn down with a crossbite, and their misalignment makes them very difficult to properly clean. With a lack of proper oral hygiene, a crossbite can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, even bone loss.
An underbite is when the lower teeth protrude past the upper teeth, affecting the appearance, aesthetics, and functionality of your smile. This problem is often caused by an undeveloped upper jaw, causing the lower one to jut out further. If you’re missing upper teeth, this can also sometimes lead to an underbite forming.
Like all other bad bites, having an underbite can make chewing and speaking extremely difficult, depending on the severity of it. An underbite can also lead to very uneven wear on your teeth, which can cause pain, discomfort, and assorted joint problems.
If you have an open bite, your teeth likely aren’t making contact when your jaw is completely closed. Open bites traditionally affect the front teeth, and are caused by many different internal and external factors. Most commonly, open bites occur due to old thumb-sucking habits from childhood, or a genetically abnormal bone structure.
If your teeth aren’t meeting properly, this can make chewing both difficult and painful. Because your teeth also affect the way you speak and pronounce words, an open bite can even be the cause of speech impediments. With an open bite, you’re also at risk of developing TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder.
Opposite to the aforementioned underbite, overbites are when the upper teeth bite too far over the lower teeth. This is also commonly referred to as an overjet. While everyone has a bit of an overbite, they can become severe enough to affect your bite’s functionality, and the appearance of your face and smile. Extreme overbites can be caused by poor oral habits, and an underdeveloped bone structure.
An overbite can also make chewing and speaking difficult, much like an underbite can. The tooth placement has the potential to cause uneven wear, which can lead to varying levels of discomfort, pain, even joint problems sooner or later.
Gapped teeth have a few different causes, and greatly affect the functionality and aesthetics of your smile. Many people also feel self-conscious about noticeably missing teeth. Gapped teeth can be caused by tooth loss, which can cause the surrounding teeth to shift in the direction of the extra space. This can wreak havoc on the alignment of your smile. These gaps can also come from abnormal jawbone growth.
Aside from just the aesthetic issues, having large gaps and spaces can lead to periodontal pockets developing, and high chances of getting periodontal disease. Because gaps leave your gums entirely open, they’re more susceptible to damage and oral disease. While they would usually rely on teeth to protect them, without them there, they’re at risk of developing various issues.

Invisalign® for Kids
Invisalign First is designed specifically for children around the ages of 7 and older. This clear aligner treatment is designed to correct developing malocclusions in primary teeth while offering a positive experience while addressing the unique needs of growing children.
As your child grows, their smile grows with them. And even with baby teeth, it may be recommended for children ages 6 to 10 to start orthodontic treatment. This is known as Phase 1 treatment.
Phase 1 treatment helps develop young jaws and/or arches to make room for existing teeth and incoming permanent teeth. Invisalign First aligners are designed to treat a broad range of teeth straightening issues in growing children, from simple to complex, including crowding, spacing, and narrow dental arches, and can also help with oral habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.
The Invisalign clear aligners are removable for easy hygiene and are designed for comfort with no brackets and poking wires.
Invisalign® for Teens
Teens also have the option to go with Invisalign treatment in Invisalign Clinic Edmonton, instead of traditional metal braces.. Orthodontic treatment through clear aligners can be more comfortable, and more convenient for your teenager’s lifestyle. There’s no need to make big dietary changes, jeopardize social events with the metal brackets and wires of braces, or have to deal with the distracting discomfort braces can sometimes bring. Your teen also won’t need to worry about big changes in oral health, as the aligners can be removed for brushing and flossing purposes.
Some parents wonder how Invisalign compares to braces, in the sense of success of treatment. Parents often worry that teens won’t wear a removable device that they can take out at any time. However, the manufacturers have implemented a neat tool that allows both the parents and the orthodontist to track your teen’s progress, and ensure you’re both getting the most out of your investment. This tracking can be done through blue compliance indicators, which exist on the physical clear aligners. If the aligners are being worn consistently, the blue dots will fade. If the dots are present at most appointments, this may be an indication that the aligners aren’t being worn. This is beneficial to everyone monitoring the treatment, and allows for an open conversation about where your teen can improve if they’re found to not be wearing their aligners as much as they should.
Invisalign® for Adults
It’s never too late to pursue orthodontic treatment, and never too late to get Invisalign. Due to an aversion to wearing braces, many adults remain unhappy with their teeth throughout their life. Luckily, Invisalign is a discreet, comfortable, and convenient option for those that want a straight, healthy smile, without the metallic appearance of traditional braces.
With Invisalign’s clear, subtle look, most people won’t even know you’re in the middle of orthodontic treatment. Through a customized treatment plan that fits your smile, you can experience all the amazing benefits that orthodontic treatment has to offer, while still being comfortable and confident. Invisalign is commonly regarded as more comfortable to wear, and preferable to the perceived bulkiness of metal braces. Unlike braces, your clear aligners can also be removed for meals, brushing, flossing, and other parts of your oral hygiene routine. In saying that, it’s still highly recommended that you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day. Wearing them for anything less than that can add more time to your treatment, and make you reach your smile goals a little slower than anticipated.
Invisalign adds more free time to your life due to having to visit your Invisalign Dentist in Edmonton less than you would if you had metal braces. Braces often need to be tightened and have wires changed on a regular basis, while Invisalign doesn’t need to be monitored or altered in these ways. Appointments are usually scheduled every 2-4 months to ensure your treatment is on track, commencing smoothly, and your teeth haven’t done anything unexpected. This gives you more free time, less stress, and is an easier way to get your dream smile with less face to face interaction.
At the end of the day, Invisalign will increase both your oral and overall health, make you feel happier and more confident, make maintaining a great oral hygiene routine easier, and give you the smile you’ve always been wanting.

How Do I Get Invisalign® Treatment?
Like all orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will first make sure that you’re a proper candidate for Invisalign. The aligners are incredibly versatile with the ability to treat a variety of common dental irregularities, but just to be on the safe side, we’ll complete a thorough examination so we know with absolute certainty that Invisalign is right for you. This will be done through a series of detailed photographs and x-rays that will help us gain a deeper understanding of your orthodontic needs. Once we have your diagnosis ready, we can take your impressions and send them off to the manufacturer where your new clear aligners will be created.
We’ll call you once your aligners are ready, and our orthodontist will show you how to properly insert them, wear them, and will go over all other treatment requirements with you. This can also be used as an opportunity to ask us any lingering questions you may have, get clarification, and develop a full understanding of your custom treatment plan. Once we’ve shown you the ins and outs of your Invisalign, we send you on your way!

Custom Treatment Plan
Receiving Your Invisalign® Aligners
As mentioned above, Invisalign treatment consists of a series of clear aligners. Each new set puts a little more pressure on your teeth in all the right places, helping to slowly guide them into the desired positions to complete your smile transformation. It’s important to wear your aligners as much as possible so each set has the opportunity to fully contribute to the success of your treatment, along with staying true to the desired timeline.
Our orthodontist will tell you to switch aligners roughly every one to two weeks, depending on the amount of time your specific treatment calls for. Every two months or so you’ll have a standing appointment with one of our specialists, who will assess your progress and ensure everything is going according to plan. During these appointments, new aligners may be given as needed for treatment. If everything seems to be going smoothly, you’ll be sent on your way and instructed to circle back in two months!
Upon treatment completion, there are still a few more steps before we can send you to live happily ever after with your newfound smile. Sometimes after orthodontic treatment teeth tend to shift back into their old places, undoing all the work you committed to over the last couple years. To ensure this doesn’t happen and your new smile remains yours, our orthodontist will design a set of retainers for you that are custom made, just for you. These retainers are to be worn as instructed, usually at night while you sleep, in order to properly maintain your new smile. By wearing these retainers as directed, your teeth will stay in the correct positions.
