Helping Edmonton & Spruce Grove kids feel confident (and prepared!) all school year

Back-to-school season means new routines, new schedules, and sometimes new braces. Whether your child is entering grade one or high school, a few simple habits can make a big difference for their dental and orthodontic comfort.

This guide will help you pack the right things, handle surprises, and know what’s urgent (and what’s not).

1. What to Pack in a “Dental + Braces Kit”

A small pouch in your child’s backpack can prevent 90% of school-day discomfort.

Essentials for ALL kids:

  • Travel toothbrush + toothpaste
  • Mini floss or floss picks
  • Small water bottle
  • Sugar-free gum (if allowed at school, stimulates saliva!)

Extras for kids with braces:

  • Orthodontic wax
  • Small mirror
  • Travel-sized mouth rinse
  • Extra elastics (if prescribed)

2. Brushing at School: What Actually Works

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and daily flossing are essential for preventing cavities and orthodontic complications. Let’s be honest, most kids won’t brush for a full two minutes in the school washroom.

Here’s what does work:

  • Encourage a quick brush after lunch if possible
  • If brushing isn’t realistic, have them rinse with water after eating
  • Use floss picks to get food unstuck from braces
  • Remind them to check for “hidden surprises” in their brackets
  • Keep mornings and evenings non-negotiable brushing times

Healthy habits at home matter more than brushing perfectly at school.

3. What to Do If a Bracket Pokes or Wire Irritates

This is the most common school-day orthodontic issue, and the easiest to fix!

If a wire is poking:

  • Dry the area
  • Cover it with orthodontic wax
  • Avoid touching it with fingers or tongue
  • Call us after school to see if an adjustment is needed

If a bracket becomes loose:

  • It’s usually NOT an emergency
  • Have your child avoid chewy foods
  • Contact us to schedule a repair

If a wire comes out completely:

  • Try guiding it back into the tube gently
  • If not possible, cover with wax and call us

4. What’s Urgent vs. What Can Wait?

Severe dental emergencies like swelling, trauma or uncontrollable bleeding require immediate care. Here is a list of emergency dental care and what qualifies as a real emergency.

Urgent (same day if possible):

  • Wire is stabbing and wax doesn’t help
  • Mouth sores preventing eating/drinking
  • Major swelling, fever, or injury to teeth
  • Trauma to the mouth during sports

Can wait until next available appointment:

  • Loose bracket that’s still on the wire
  • Broken elastic chain
  • Minor discomfort after adjustments
  • Lost elastics

When in doubt, call us. We help families in Edmonton & Spruce Grove handle school-day “dental dramas” every week.

5. School Snack Tips That Protect Teeth (and Braces)

Some snacks turn lunch into a dental disaster… these swaps help keep cavities away:

Smile-Safe Snacks

Cheese sticks, yogurt, sliced apples & berries, soft crackers, veggies + hummus

Avoid in Lunchboxes

Sticky fruit snacks, gummy bears, hard chips, popcorn, juice boxes (water is best!)

6. A Simple After-School Routine That Works

To keep on track:

  • Brush right when they get home
  • Swap screen-time snacking for a single planned snack
  • Check braces for food traps
  • Pack next day’s dental kit before bed

Small routines make huge differences.
