The “Braces-Ready” Checklist for Parents

A quick guide for families in Edmonton & Spruce Grove
Getting your child ready for braces doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. A few simple steps can make the whole process smoother, more comfortable, and less stressful.

Here’s a short and practical checklist to follow before treatment begins.
1. Get a Fresh Dental Cleaning

Braces stick best to clean teeth, and a cleaning helps remove plaque that would otherwise get trapped under brackets.
What to do:
- Book a cleaning with your dentist within the last 3–6 months.
- Keep regular checkups during treatment.
2. Treat Any Cavities First

Cavities can worsen under braces, and fillings are harder to do afterward.
What to do:
- Ask your dentist if any cavities or sensitive areas need treatment first.
- Fix any “trouble spots” before your bonding appointment.
3. Build Strong Brushing Habits

Braces make brushing more challenging, but good habits now help a LOT later.
What to do:
- Brush 2–3 times daily with fluoride toothpaste.
- Add floss picks, floss threaders, or interdental brushes.
- Practice checking for “missed spots” in the mirror.
4. Make a Sports Mouthguard Plan

Mouthguards help protect teeth, braces, and jaws during sports. If your child plays sports, a mouthguard protects both teeth and braces.
What to do:
- Tell us which sports your child plays.
- Choose a braces-friendly mouthguard (boil-and-bite or orthodontic type).
- Always wear it during games and practices.
5. Prepare Your Questions for the Consult

Your consultation is the best time to understand the plan and set expectations.
Great questions to ask:
- What type of braces does my child need?
- How long will treatment take?
- What foods should they avoid?
- How often are appointments?
- What if a bracket breaks?
- What tools do you recommend for brushing with braces?
6. Prep Your Child Emotionally

Braces are a big deal! A little reassurance goes a long way.
What to do:
- Talk positively about braces.
- Let them pick brace colours or a new toothbrush.
- Explain they may feel sore for a couple of days, but it gets easier.
